TIME to Change the “SINGLE” story about minorities!

TIME to Change the “SINGLE” story about minorites!

Good day fellow bloggers,

the link I posted today is to an article in the NY Sunday Times regarding the poor number of children’s books featuring colored protagonists. I for one here on “Building Better Biliterates” am trying to build awareness for the same literary crisis in Latin America, in particular Honduras, the country that is now my new home.

The article cites that the typical stories representing young colored kids are generally related to their extreme hardships during slavery or the civil rights movements, the darkness of the material being a discourager for young readers. Even here in Honduras one of the greatest books published by a local author is “Green Prision” by Ramon Amado Amador about oppression during the highs of the banana farming industry.

I agree that it is important to learn of our hardships and our spirit of survival but there are also other beautiful stories of true love, romance, family loyalty, togetherness etc that celebrate the culture of minorites. WE NEED TO KEEP INSPIRING OUR YOUNG TO WRITE AND CHANGE THE SINGLE STORY OF despair, depression, hardship, abuse etc. In 2014 there are so many new heroes and heroines to celebrate and so many picturesque places to challenge the creativity of our children’s imagination.

In Honduras, we have the problem of poor literacy numbers- reality:  most lower class citizens can sign their name and do just enough to get a menial job- A READING CULTURE does not exisit- they either have no time or no interest because it seems too difficult to do. In my company we created the ESL game CBC CODEBREAKER with the hopes of making grammar FUN, EASY and UNFORGETTABLE for young ones so they can go beyond just simple classwork and WRITE THEIR OWN STORY!

HELP US SPREAD THE WORD OF CBC CODEBREAKER so we can INSPIRE NEW IDEAS AND FIRE THE IMAGINATION OF A ONCE UPON A TIME DOWNTRODDEN PEOPLE!

Now there is a new Minister: Marlon Escoto and I would like to get another opportunity to show them our project.

Teachers are cu…

Teachers are cultural workers (Freire, 2000) and their cultural insensitivities can negatively affect the lives of the children they teach. If teachers are committed to the process of becoming interculturally sensitive and understand the complexity of their students’ cultures (Chen, 1997) then they make a positive impact on the lives of their students.

I have been living this reality for the last 13 years. I also beleive it is the root of my success as a “cosmopolitan” teacher! I speak speak 2 languges fluently, I can read and write in 3.5 languages, I know basic expressions in couple others….it allows me to have a more open-mind as a teacher- it is a humbling experience the Learning another language!
